WebSite Links
-
Why they are more important
now than ever before!
Once upon a time when the Internet was
young and free, the word "web" derived from
the fact that the Internet was much like the interwoven
design of a spider web. From any point on the web, you
could link to another point on the web and be instantly
transported there. Back then, web authors always included
a LINKS page full of hyperlinks for their favorite websites,
places of interest and the convenience of other surfers.
Back then, if you asked someone that had another website
to exchange links with you it was all done readily and
we all thought that it was the neighborly thing to do.
Much like when automobiles were the latest gadget, drivers
happily waved to each other when they passed, whether
they knew who they were waving at or not. It was the
right thing to do.
As the Internet grew, and before the advent
of the billionaire search engine capitalists, it started
to become very important for people with websites to
get links from other websites, since there was now a
large number of websites and getting yourself found
in the wilderness of the web was very important. Necessity
being the mother of invention, people started coming
up with all sorts of things to provide links, from web
rings, to banners, to website awards or simply spamming
your link on someone else's guestbook page, links had
become very important.
Around 12 years ago, realizing the need
for an efficient search engine, some very smart soon
to be billionaires launched yahoo.com. This wasn't the
first search engine on the net but it was to become
a model for all the new engines like google that would
come later. Now there was a comprehensive search engine,
website authors started to move their "How to be
found" efforts away from links and into the now
universal META tags that were found on the top of each
web page. In a meta tag, you would simply type the description
of your page, add a few keywords and YAHOO! .. you were
found! No more need for old fashioned links. The search
engine would send out their spiders and catalog everyone's
website's and everyone was found.
That system worked for a few years but
there was one major drawback. With so many websites
out there, everyone wanted to get top billing by the
search engines and soon all sorts of scams were under
way. META tags were loaded to encompass everything and
anything so that your page got better ranking. Doorway
pages were set up to fool the search engine spiders
that simply gobbled up everything they found on a page,
not knowing that it was planted there for them to eat,
like mice at a box of decon.
As corporations and the general public
became more aware of the Internet as a sales tool, the
search engine companies started calling the shots. It
was no longer a simple matter of putting a website on
the Internet and expecting everyone to beat a path to
your door. Big business had entered the fray and as
with all things in life the spoils go to the biggest
and most powerful.
Google realized that the search engine
should be like the yellow pages, everyone that wants
to do business on the net should pay someone to be found.
Since everyone wanted top billing, google came along
with adwords, a pay per click advertising scheme that
guaranteed you first page billing for a fee. At first
the fee was small, very reasonable indeed, but then
as more and more companies saw the advantage to paying
for top billing instead of working on META tags and
links, the competition became fierce even for the pay
advertisers. It wasn't long before those that were paying
for listings found themselves competing for those top
place billings by offering more and more money for the
same link. Today its not unusual to pay $1.00 to $5.00
everytime someone clicks a link on your advertising
campaign. To make things a little harder for everyone,
and more profitable for the search engines, most of
the large engines today have abandoned the META tags
entirely in deference to .... you guessed it ......
LINKS!
Ok so we are back to the beginning you say? Well not
quite because now those links have taken a corporate
twist. LINKS today have a pecking order. The search
engine algorithm is now so sophisticated that the way
your page is ranked in a web search is mostly dependent
on how many people are linking to you.... BUT .... also
in that algorithm the ranking of the linked page its
coming from. Ok... so your confused .. well lets say
you have a computer store on the Internet, and you have
6 other friends of yours that link to you and none of
them are major players in the computer business, well,
you get ranked a little better for the 6 links but not
a high score because the pages that linked to you were
not major players either. Now suppose your friend Bill
Gates put a link on Microsoft.com to your website...
now you have a huge score because everyone and their
mother knows who Microsoft is.
So .. the more links you have the better you will be
ranked. The more big name sites that link to you, even
better still. The fact is that links are still important
and today they are vastly important if you want to get
listed in a search engines regular listing. The more
you have the better you will rank with the search engines.
Its true!
Will links take people away from your website? Well
the fact is that 98% of every visitor you get will leave
without buying anything anyway. If Wallmart had that
problem they would be bankrupt in a week. By not participating
in link sharing your simply playing into the hands of
the large companies that can afford those big pay per
clicks. And your also playing into the hands of the
search engine billionaires who know that sooner or later,
the only way you will ever get found...is to pay their
price!
In an effort to help keep the Internet equal and open
to all, we will provide any customer with a free website
link at their request. A return link from your website
would be appreciated but not required. Non-Customers
may also apply for a link but are required to reciprocate.
Remember these links are for search engine spiders,
not humans. No description of the linked page is intended
or required.
